INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON ADVANCES IN MILLETS PRODUCTION, PROCESSING AND VALUE CHAIN DEVELOPMENT
22nd April – 1st May 2024, Hyderabad

ICAR- Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad in collaboration with FAO of the United Nations under the Asia-Africa South-South Cooperation is conducting 10 days International Workshop on Advances in Millets Production, Processing and Value Chain Development from April 22nd to 01st May, 2024 with participants from Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. This is the second phase of workshop under the FAO and ICAR-IIMR Capacity Development Initiative in the context of International Year of Millets, 2023. The aim of this initiative is to facilitate the exchange of technical know-how and development experiences in millet value chains between India and selected countries in Africa and Asia. The expected outcome is improved knowledge and practices in areas of crop improvement, production, protection, processing and millet value chain development among participating countries.

The inauguration of the workshop was conducted with the lighting of the lamp by Dr. C. Tara Satyavathi, Director, ICAR-IIMR, Hyderabad. During her inaugural address, Dr. C. Tara Satyavathi highlighted about importance and major role of millets in promoting dietary diversification in the context of changing global climate. She also mentioned India’s leadership in mainstreaming millets production and consumption has opened viable solutions to address global hunger and malnutrition. She highlighted the key initiatives such as Millets and other ancient grains international research initiative (MAHARISHI) as global platforms aimed at fostering research collaborations and generating awareness about millets and other ancient grains. She also highlighted the value chain developed by ICAR- IIMR as model value chain for promotion of millets and urged participants to develop similar value chain models in the other countries in a collaborative mode through exchange of knowledge, transfer of technology and best practices.

The workshop is organized by course directors Drs. C. Tara Satyavathi, Swarna Ronanki, K.N. Ganapathy, and B. Dayakar Rao and coordinated by Drs. K. Venkatesh, N Anuradha S. Srividhya, C. Deepika, B. Amasiddha and Ravi Kumar.

Visit of newly recruited AOs and FAOs of ICAR on 06.04.24

Dr KBRS Visarada, Incharge Director, ICAR-IIMR addressing the newly recruited AOs and FAOs of ICARThe newly recruited Administrative Officers (AO) and Finance & Accounts Officers (FAO) of ICAR are undergoing a 4 weeks training at ICAR- NAARM, Hyderabad. As a part of their training program, about 60 officers visited ICAR-Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad on 06 April 2024 along with the SAO of ICAR-NAARM Mr. Mukul Rajsingh.

The Officers were welcomed at the administrative building and given an introduction about millets, cultivars, cultivation practices and why we should eat millets. Visit to COE on Millet Value Addition

They were taken to Nutrihub - The technology business incubator for startups confederation for a formal meeting and refreshment. The program was graced by Dr KBRS Visarada - the incharge Director, Mrs Ritu Dalal - Senior Administrative Officer, Mr. Shaik Rukman - Finance and Accounts Officer and Dr. J. Stanley, Principal Scientist and Dr. A Srinivas, Scientist of ICAR-IIMR.

They went around the Centre of Excellence on millet value addition and processing, the Common Facility Centre and the Nutrihub and were given the first-hand information on the research and development happening at ICAR-IIMR and also the promotion of millet business all through the country.

 

International training on “India-Africa Webinar Exchange on Millets”

An international webinar on “International (India-Africa) exchange of experience sharing and capacity building program to expand the cultivation, use and processing of millet as a climate-resilient crop, and to strengthen agrobiodiversity, balanced nutrition, millet value chain, value addition and entrepreneurship in Africa” was organized by ICAR-IIMR, Hyderabad during 8-11 January, 2024. In the inaugural session, Dr Raghavendra Kavali welcomed the gathering. Dr. C Tara Satyavathi, Director, IIMR delivered the opening remarks. She presented Indian Institute of Millets Research as Global Centre of Excellence on Millets R&D.

 

Introductory remarks and purpose of the programme was done by Mr. Ekkehard Shroeder, German Project Team Leader, Indo-German Cooperation on Seed Sector Development, Germany. Drs B Venkatesh Bhat, Sooganna, Sangappa, Srividhya S, Malathi VM and other scientists from ICAR-IIMR Hyderabad were present during the programme. Dr Vilas A Tonapi Former Director, ICAR-IIMR, Hyderabad also graced the occasion. Dr. VM Malathi proposed the vote of thanks.

 

International training on " “Advanced Post-Harvest Technologies for Seed Quality Improvement”

An international training on “Advanced Post-Harvest Technologies for Seed Quality Improvement” under the aegis of Indo-German Bilateral Cooperation on Seed Sector Development was jointly organized by ICAR-IIMR, Hyderabad and DSST, Seed Centre, TNAU, Coimbatore during 18-21st December, 2023. In the inaugural session, Dr Manonmani, Professor & Head, DSST, TNAU welcomed the gathering. Dr B Venkatesh Bhat Principal Scientist, ICAR-IIMR, Hyderabad spoke about the training overview.

 

Dr R Umarani Director, Seed Centre, TNAU, Dr A Raviraj, Dean Agricultural Engineering, TNAU and Mr. Ekkehard Schroeder Team Leader, ADT Project Consulting, Germany spoke on the occasion. Dr V Geetha Lakshmi, The Vice Chancellor, TNAU, Coimbatore, in her special address, emphasized the importance of seed & their post-harvest losses and seed quality maintenance. Dr. Sooganna, Course Coordinator, ICAR-IIMR, Hyderabad proposed the vote of thanks.
